The Collaborative Research Centre 787 "Semiconductor Nanophotonics: Materials, Models, Devices" combines three complementary areas of research aiming at the development of novel photonic and nanophotonic devices. The close collaboration between the different research areas and their mutual integration will help to explore new functionalities of nanophotonic devices and will open new dimensions of applications. These include quantum key systems that are based on q-bit and entangled photon emitters, high frequency vertical cavity surface emitting lasers for future multi-terabus systems, quantum dot lasers and optical amplifiers for ultra-high bit rate Ethernet as well as high brilliance IR and visible lasers for materials processing and UV laser diodes for applications in optoelectronics, water purification, UV curing, and medical diagnostics
Currently more than 120 scientists from Berlin and Magdeburg are working within the CRC 787. This joint venture of fundamental and applied research at universities and publicly funded research institutes is unique within Germany. The CRC 787 comprises a total of 17 projects from TU Berlin, which is also the speaker university, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg as well as the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (Leibniz Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik), the Fraunhofer-Institut für Nachrichtentechnik (Heinrich-Hertz-Institute), the Weierstraß-Institute for Applied Analyis and Stochastic, and the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik.
The research activities of the CRC 787 are accompanied by a strong educational component, which is provided by the School of Nanophotonics (SON). One of the key elements of the SON is its interdisciplinary and international character and the strong educational networking between the project partners of the CRC and those abroad. Currently more than 65 Ph.D. students with diverse scientific backgrounds ranging from mathematics, physics to electrical engineering are members of the SON, which features a number of educational offerings as well as national and international educational activities like the International Nano-Optoelectronics Workshop iNOW.
