Labgirls

Lupe

Labgirls is a project of the Technische Universität Berlin which is supported by the CRC 787. Here, small groups of interested female pupils have the opportunity to experience practical work in a research lab and have the chance to develop experimental techniques, in addition to learning many funda- mental physics principles. Experiments are selected from a vast range of topics, including optics, atomic phys- ics, radiation, astrophysics and low temperature physics. While students are performing the experiments they are supported by a female tutor, who also serves as role model. In addition to participating in experiments the female pupils have the chance to visit different research laboratories in the department and obtain a better understanding of the work life of a physicist researcher. The female pupils are actively recruited by visits and presentations at different Berlin high schools, through posters and flyers as well as the website of the project. The overall goal of the project is to encourage young women to study subjects in the area of natural sciences and thus to increase the number of female students in the MINT (“Mathemaatik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaf- ten und Technik”) area. In order to attract young female students into the MINT related areas principal inves- tigators of the CRC (e.g. Prof. Dähne and co-workers) support early study endeavours and the final decision for a technical subject in the framework of the MINTgrün project. By lecturing experimental physics for young female pupils during their decision making process of finding a suitable subject, young females are not only prepared but also motivated for studying physics in order to increase the female share of students in agreement with the gender equality goals of our main institution, the TUB.
